L'Univers Café opens its doors steps from Place Graslin, in the heart of cultured 19th-century Nantes. It quickly becomes a meeting point for artists, travellers and theatre-goers. The oldest cocktail bar in Nantes, it is also the first venue to host live jazz in Europe, in February 1918.

In February 1918, an American soldier , a musician in the US Navy band , walked into L'Univers after a concert on Place Graslin and played what are considered the very first notes of Jazz ever played in Europe. Before Paris, before London, it was here in Nantes that this music first laid its brass on the Old Continent.

Près de deux siècles d'histoire
1852 : naissance du Café de l'Univers
Le 24 juillet 1852, le Café de l'Univers ouvre ses portes au 16 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, à l'angle de la place Graslin. Nantes est alors en plein essor : le Théâtre Graslin, inauguré quelques décennies plus tôt, attire bourgeoisie locale, armateurs, artistes et voyageurs de passage. Le café s'impose rapidement comme un lieu de rendez-vous incontournable du centre-ville nantais , on y croise négociants, comédiens en sortie de scène et habitués venus prolonger la soirée autour d'un verre.
1918 : les premières notes de jazz en Europe
Février 1918. Un soldat américain de la fanfare de l'US Navy, en escale à Saint-Nazaire, monte à Nantes pour un concert place Graslin. Après la représentation, il pousse la porte de L'Univers et joue, devant une poignée de clients médusés, ce que l'on tient aujourd'hui pour les toutes premières notes de jazz jouées sur le sol européen. Avant Paris, avant Londres, c'est dans ce bar nantais que la musique du XXe siècle a posé ses cuivres sur le Vieux Continent. Une plaque et plusieurs ouvrages d'historiens du jazz documentent aujourd'hui ce moment fondateur.
Années 1930 : l'âge d'or des cocktails
Pendant que les États-Unis vivent la Prohibition, l'Europe découvre la culture cocktail à travers les barmen américains exilés. L'Univers Café adopte naturellement les codes du speakeasy : carte travaillée, sirops maison, glace pilée, atmosphère feutrée. Les soirées s'étirent jusqu'au petit matin, la clientèle se mélange , artistes, médecins, journalistes, marins , et le bar gagne une réputation qui dépasse les frontières du quartier Graslin.
Aujourd'hui : un patrimoine vivant
En 2026, L'Univers Café reste fidèle à ce qu'il est depuis 174 ans : le plus vieux bar à cocktails nantais, un point de rendez-vous pour les amateurs de mixologie, les couples, les groupes d'amis et les voyageurs venus chercher une expérience speakeasy authentique. Christophe Guilbaud, à la tête du lieu, veille à ce que chaque cocktail soit préparé à la minute, avec des produits frais et un savoir-faire transmis , dans un décor velours-boiseries qui prolonge l'esprit des années folles.
